METHOD & PRACTICAL GUIDANCE

Get a result you can use.

Pick a pixel or an overall palette.

A sampled pixel provides a precise location-specific RGBA value. A palette summarizes colors from a sampled version of the image and is better for exploring a visual theme. Anti-aliased edges and compressed photographs contain many nearby colors, so the dominant palette is not a definitive brand specification.

Account for transparency.

A partly transparent foreground looks different on different backgrounds. HEX, RGB and HSL values describe the sampled color; the alpha value determines how it composites. Choose the background used by your design before interpreting the contrast result. A checkerboard is a preview aid, not the final background.

Use contrast as one check.

The contrast comparison uses the chosen colors after compositing transparency. The common WCAG AA thresholds shown are 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text. Passing this numeric check does not establish accessibility of an entire design. Check font size, weight, focus states and actual use of color too.

Copy one color value, or export a CSS/JSON palette. Image decoding and display color management can differ between applications. How we document our tools

A PRACTICAL EXAMPLE

Know what a useful result looks like.

Turn an image color into a reusable design value.

Try this workflow

Start with
The practice graphic with forest, ivory and sage regions.
Set up
Pick a pixel in a solid region; compare text against your chosen background.
What to expect
HEX describes RGB; RGB and HSL retain alpha when relevant. Contrast uses the selected color composited onto the chosen background.

Check before using the result

  • Sample away from antialiased boundaries for a flat color.
  • Check normal-text AA at 4.5:1 and large-text AA at 3:1.

When the result needs work

The palette is sampled and grouped, so it does not list every source pixel color. Browser decoding and color management can affect values from wide-gamut images.

Examples illustrate specific inputs and settings. Actual output size and appearance depend on your file and browser. Practice images are synthetic; they do not contain personal data.

GOOD TO KNOW

A few useful answers.

More help

How do I pick a color from an image?

Upload an image and click anywhere on it — the tool shows the exact HEX and RGB value at that pixel and lets you copy it.

Does it extract a palette?

Yes. Alongside the eyedropper, it pulls a set of dominant colors from the image so you can grab a whole palette.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Color picking happens entirely in your browser. Image files are not uploaded. Processing metadata may be recorded; see our privacy policy.
