METHOD & PRACTICAL GUIDANCE

Get a result you can use.

Choose the model for your device.

The compact model is a practical starting point. The detail model needs a larger initial download and more resources. Model files load from IMG.LY’s resource host; your image is processed locally. Download progress and inference progress are separate stages, and the first run can be slower than later runs.

Check the hard edges.

Inspect hair, glasses, gaps between fingers and objects close to the subject. Use the checkerboard, light or dark preview to make edge defects easier to see. A busy background or low contrast can confuse the segmentation model. The preview is a way to judge the cutout, not a promise of perfect selection.

Export for the destination.

Choose PNG or WebP when you need transparent pixels. Choose a solid background for JPG. The alpha-mask export describes which pixels are retained and is useful for further editing. Download a cutout only after checking the edges at actual size, especially before placing it on a contrasting background.

A PRACTICAL EXAMPLE

Know what a useful result looks like.

Prepare a subject cutout for a new layout.

Try this workflow

Start with
A well-lit subject with a distinct photographic background.
Set up
Run the selected AI model; switch the preview between light and dark.
What to expect
The estimated foreground becomes a cutout. PNG or WebP can preserve alpha; JPG requires a solid background.

Check before using the result

  • Check hair, fine edges and holes at 100%.
  • Inspect the alpha mask when the outline looks wrong.

When the result needs work

AI can erase foreground detail or leave background fragments. The model download is separate from your image, which stays local. Use color removal for simple flat graphics.

Examples illustrate specific inputs and settings. Actual output size and appearance depend on your file and browser. Practice images are synthetic; they do not contain personal data.

GOOD TO KNOW

A few useful answers.

More help

How does the background remover work?

It runs an AI segmentation model directly in your browser to detect the subject and erase everything else, giving you a transparent PNG. The first run downloads the model, so it takes a little longer.

Is my image uploaded to a server?

No. Your image is processed entirely on your device. The only thing downloaded is the AI model itself (from a CDN) — your photo never leaves your browser.

What do I get back?

A PNG with a transparent background, ready to drop onto any color, product page, or design.

Why is the first use slow?

The model and runtime resources are downloaded on first use and can be large. The compact model uses a smaller download. Cached resources can make later runs faster.
