METHOD & PRACTICAL GUIDANCE

Get a result you can use.

Confirm the output dimensions.

Choose 2× or 4× super-resolution. A 600 × 400 input becomes 1200 × 800 at 2× or 2400 × 1600 at 4×. Multiplying both sides by four multiplies pixel count by sixteen. Large-image preparation is an explicit option; it can reduce the input before inference to keep memory use manageable.

Inspect the estimated detail.

The ESRGAN model estimates new pixels. It may sharpen textures while changing text, facial features or repetitive patterns. Use the original/result comparison and inspect at 100%, rather than judging only a fitted preview. This is unsuitable for establishing evidence or verifying details in an unreadable document.

Choose the final file type.

PNG preserves the generated result without lossy compression and supports transparency. JPG needs a solid background and can be smaller. WebP offers another size/quality tradeoff. The model loads from this site on first use; inference runs on your device. Stop processing if you need to select a different image.

Upscaling cannot guarantee recovery of missing detail. If you only need smaller pixel dimensions, use Resize Image instead. How we document our tools

A PRACTICAL EXAMPLE

Know what a useful result looks like.

Enlarge an image while reviewing what the AI estimated.

Try this workflow

Start with
A 320 × 240 image.
Set up
Select 2× AI scaling, inspect the output at 100%, then export.
What to expect
The AI output is 640 × 480 when no input preparation is required. Estimated detail may differ from the original subject.

Check before using the result

  • Check faces, text and repeated textures.
  • Review prepared input dimensions for large images.
  • Check output format and file size.

When the result needs work

A larger image is not proof of more accurate detail. Strong artifacts can be a reason to keep the original or use ordinary resizing.

Examples illustrate specific inputs and settings. Actual output size and appearance depend on your file and browser. Practice images are synthetic; they do not contain personal data.

GOOD TO KNOW

A few useful answers.

More help

How is AI upscaling different from resizing?

A normal resize stretches pixels and gets blurry. AI super-resolution predicts detail to "paint in" the enlarged areas, producing a sharper result at higher resolution.

Is my image uploaded?

No. Upscaling runs on your device using an in-browser AI model. Only the model is downloaded — your image never leaves your browser.

How much larger does it get?

Choose 2× or 4× enlargement. Exact output dimensions appear before processing. Large inputs require explicit preparation to fit browser memory; preparation can reduce the source dimensions.

Why is the first use slow?

The AI model loads on first use and is then cached. Large images also take longer as they are processed in patches.
