METHOD & PRACTICAL GUIDANCE

Get a result you can use.

Start with clear printed text.

The local OCR workflow uses an English language model. A sharp image with straight text and enough space around the letters is easier to recognize than a tilted, blurred or decorative sample. Choose a crop that focuses on the document rather than its surrounding background.

Read the extracted text.

OCR can confuse similar characters, punctuation and columns. Check names, dates and numbers against the source, particularly when they will be used in a form. Recognition output is editable so you can correct mistakes before copying or exporting a text file.

Understand what leaves the browser.

OCR resources and the English model are served from this site. Recognition runs on your device. Copy and TXT export contain the extracted text, not the source image. If the result is empty or incomplete, try a clearer or more closely cropped image rather than assuming there was no text.

OCR is transcription assistance and should not be used as an unchecked source of information for important decisions. How we document our tools

A PRACTICAL EXAMPLE

Know what a useful result looks like.

Extract editable English text from a clear image.

Try this workflow

Start with
The synthetic practice document with an order number and total.
Set up
Run Extract text, then read and correct the output.
What to expect
The engine returns editable text and a confidence summary. Copy and TXT download use the text currently in the editor.

Check before using the result

  • Check numbers, decimal points and names against the source.
  • Correct errors before using the text elsewhere.

When the result needs work

Low confidence is a signal to review, not a calibrated probability. Tiny, rotated, handwritten or non-English text can fail with this English model.

Examples illustrate specific inputs and settings. Actual output size and appearance depend on your file and browser. Practice images are synthetic; they do not contain personal data.

More help

Which languages are supported?

This workspace reads printed English text. Clear, straight, high contrast text works best. Handwriting, curved text and complex layouts can produce mistakes; review and correct the result before using it.

Does OCR need a download?

On first use, the browser downloads the OCR engine and English language model from this website. Recognition then happens on your device. The model may be cached by your browser; your images are not uploaded. PDFs are not supported.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Image files and results stay in your browser. This workspace does not send filenames or editing results to our server, and you do not need an account.

Which images can I open?

Use JPG, PNG or WebP up to 50 MB per file, 8,192 pixels per side and 32 megapixels. Animated images are treated as a still frame. Convert HEIC with our HEIC to JPG tool first.
