A PRACTICAL EXAMPLE

Know what a useful result looks like.

Make an avatar with a predictable transparent outline.

Try this workflow

Start with
A rectangular portrait or the practice graphic.
Set up
Choose a 512 px circle, position the subject and adjust zoom.
What to expect
The export is a 512 × 512 square PNG with transparent pixels outside the circle. Its physical file shape remains rectangular.

Check before using the result

  • Check the circle on light and dark backgrounds.
  • Verify that important features stay inside the circle.

When the result needs work

JPG cannot represent transparent corners. An app can still crop or add a background when displaying your avatar.

Examples illustrate specific inputs and settings. Actual output size and appearance depend on your file and browser. Practice images are synthetic; they do not contain personal data.

GOOD TO KNOW

A few useful answers.

More help

Why does the downloaded file still have square dimensions?

Image files have rectangular dimensions. The photo appears inside a circle, with transparent pixels in the corners of the square PNG. Place it over another background to see the circular shape.

Can I move the crop?

Yes. Horizontal and vertical position controls move the crop where there is room, and zoom brings the subject closer. Export sizes range from 32 to 4,096 pixels square. Enlarging does not add image detail.

Are my images uploaded or stored?

No. These tools read and process image files locally in your browser. No account is required, and this workspace does not send filenames or editing results to our server.

Which images can I use?

Use JPG, PNG or WebP files up to 50 MB each, 8,192 pixels on either side and 32 megapixels in total. Animated files are processed as a still frame. For HEIC, use our HEIC to JPG converter first.
