A PRACTICAL EXAMPLE

Know what a useful result looks like.

Add breathing room without cropping your source pixels.

Try this workflow

Start with
A 640 × 480 image.
Set up
Set a 20 px border on each side.
What to expect
The output is 680 × 520 px. The original image sits inside the expanded canvas; choose solid color or transparent padding.

Check before using the result

  • Check the new dimensions.
  • Choose PNG when transparent padding is required.

When the result needs work

Adding a border increases dimensions and can increase file size. It does not shrink the original image to fit an upload limit.

Examples illustrate specific inputs and settings. Actual output size and appearance depend on your file and browser. Practice images are synthetic; they do not contain personal data.

GOOD TO KNOW

A few useful answers.

More help

Does adding a border crop the image?

No. The border is added outside the original image. A 20-pixel border increases both the width and height by 40 pixels. Your original pixels remain in the center.

Can I add transparent space instead?

Yes. Choose transparent padding and download the PNG. Transparent areas appear as a checkerboard in the preview and can show the background of the page where you use the image.

Are my images uploaded or stored?

No. These tools read and process image files locally in your browser. No account is required, and this workspace does not send filenames or editing results to our server.

Which images can I use?

Use JPG, PNG or WebP files up to 50 MB each, 8,192 pixels on either side and 32 megapixels in total. Animated files are processed as a still frame. For HEIC, use our HEIC to JPG converter first.
