METHOD & PRACTICAL GUIDANCE

Get a result you can use.

Choose a measurable target.

Enter the file limit. Lossless optimization preserves the original format and dimensions by default. Quality loss must be explicitly enabled before the tool searches JPG or WebP encoding quality; resizing requires a separate choice. The result shows the achieved size and whether the target was met. Extremely small targets can be impossible without a substantial change to the image.

Keep important details readable.

For a screenshot, inspect its smallest text. For a photograph, inspect hair, gradients and dark areas. If a quality reduction creates visible artifacts, reducing the dimensions a little may be preferable. Disable resizing when the receiving service requires an exact width and height.

Match the receiving service.

Check which formats the upload form accepts before exporting. WebP can be efficient, but a JPG-only form will reject it regardless of its byte count. A transparent image also needs a format and background choice that suit the destination. File-size and dimension requirements are separate checks.

A target is a requirement to verify, not a guarantee of unchanged image quality. Keep the original and review the result before submitting it elsewhere. How we document our tools

A PRACTICAL EXAMPLE

Know what a useful result looks like.

Meet a file upload limit with a measured result.

Try this workflow

Start with
A photograph that is larger than 200 KB.
Set up
Set 200 KB and leave quality loss disabled for exact original pixels.
What to expect
The result reports achieved bytes, dimensions, lossless or lossy encoding, and whether the target was met. Here 200 KB means 204,800 bytes.

Check before using the result

  • Check Target met before submitting.
  • Inspect fine detail after quality or dimension reduction.

When the result needs work

Lossless mode keeps quality and dimensions intact even when the target is impossible. Quality loss and resizing need an explicit choice. The site receiving the image may use decimal KB, so use a slightly lower target when needed.

Examples illustrate specific inputs and settings. Actual output size and appearance depend on your file and browser. Practice images are synthetic; they do not contain personal data.

GOOD TO KNOW

A few useful answers.

More help

Can I compress a photo to exactly 100 KB?

The tool aims for a file at or below your chosen limit, rather than padding it to an exact size. It first optimizes losslessly in the original format. If that cannot meet the limit, you can explicitly allow lossy JPG or WebP encoding and optional resizing. The achieved size and dimensions are shown before download.

What happens if the target cannot be met?

The result is clearly marked as above your target. Lossless mode preserves your quality even when the target is not possible. Choose a larger limit, or explicitly enable quality loss and optional resizing. JPG output uses a white background for transparent images; WebP can retain transparency.

Are my images uploaded or stored?

No. These tools read and process image files locally in your browser. No account is required, and this workspace does not send filenames or editing results to our server.

Which images can I use?

Use JPG, PNG or WebP files up to 50 MB each, 8,192 pixels on either side and 32 megapixels in total. Animated files are processed as a still frame. For HEIC, use our HEIC to JPG converter first.
